Stimulant type drugs, such as amphetamine or cocaine, cause the nerve cells in the brain to release abnormally large amounts of natural neurotransmitters; this occurrence prevents the normal recycling of these brain chemicals, which is needed to shut off the signal between neurons. This disruption in the brain's normal processes produces a greatly amplified message, ultimately disrupting communication channels. The difference that occurs in the brain that is altered by stimulant use can best be described as the difference between someone whispering into your ear and someone shouting into a microphone.

There is a delicate balance that involves curbing criminal activity that is related to prescription drug abuse, while making sure that people with legitimate health needs can still access care--the fact of the matter is that millions of lives are improved because of these same prescription drugs that may sometimes be abused.

Nearly two-thirds of individuals in treatment for opiate abuse report that they were physically or sexually abused as children.

Keep in mind that drug abusers will try to hide their symptoms and deny their substance abuse problems. There are, however, numerous ?warning signs? that strongly suggest drug involvement: expressing feelings of depression, exhaustion, or hopelessness ,talking incoherently ,the inability to relax or to have fun without taking drugs, employment problems and school absences ,irritability, wide mood swings, manic behavior, or angry outbursts.
