Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
The perceived availability of marijuana declined from 52.2 percent in 2004 to 51.0 percent in 2005, and the perceived availability of LSD declined during the same period from 16.9 to 15.7 percent. The perceived availability of cocaine, crack, and heroin remained unchanged between 2004 and 2005.
The national prevalence rate for the use of cocaine in the past year among all persons aged 12 or older was 2.5 percent. Because cocaine is one of the substances included in the "any illegal drug other than marijuana" category, it is useful to compare the rankings of States with respect to these two substance measures. In 2002.2003, only five of the States ranked in the highest fifth for past month use of an illegal drug other than marijuana (aged 12 or older) also had past year rates of cocaine use (aged 12 or older) that were in the highest fifth. Colorado had the highest rate of past year cocaine use (3.9 percent) among persons aged 12 or older; the District of Columbia had the highest rate (3.7 percent) among those aged 26 or older; Rhode Island had the highest rate (12.1 percent) among those aged 18 to 25; and Arizona had the highest rate (3.2 percent) among teens aged 12 to 17 (Table B.7). Arizona and Colorado were the only States that ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).
In 2008, the average age at first alcohol use among recent initiates aged 12 to 49 was 17.0 years, similar to the corresponding 2007 estimate (16.8 years). The mean age at first use among recent initiates aged 12 or older who initiated use prior to the age of 21 was 15.9 years, which was similar to the 2007 estimate (15.8 years).
Drug addiction is an extremely serious problem that affects hundreds of thousands of individuals in the U.S. from all walks of life. Any person can succumb to a drug or alcohol addiction. An individual could be financially se and have had a wonderful family life, and they still may develop an addiction problem, as it is strictly about the individual.
In 2005, the average age at first alcohol use among recent initiates aged 12 to 49 was 16.4 years. This average age was 16.6 years in 2002 and 16.4 years in both 2003 and 2004, but these are not statistically different from the average age at first use in 2005. Excluding initiation at age 21 or older, the mean ages were 15.5 years in 2002 and 15.6 years in 2003, 2004, and 2005.
Since passage of the 2006 Patriot Act which controls public access to pseudoephedrine, limits quantities, and requires identification to purchase the medicine, the number of homemade meth labs has been reduced significantly. The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) estimates that 75% of all methamphetamine available in the U.S. today is produced in "super labs" operated by Mexican drug trafficking organizations.
