Occasionally excessive and/or chronic use of methamphetamine can lead to amphetamine psychosis, with side effects such as hallucinations, paranoia, delusions, and thought disorder.

Illegal sales of amphetamines winded down after the federal government tightened its control on the production of amphetamines. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) cracked down on "script doctors" who freely handed out the drug.

When chemicals are inhaled they are rapidly absorbed through the lung tissue and into the bloodstream; these chemicals are then rapidly distributed to the brain and other major organs throughout the body.

Although the rate of past month illegal drug use was higher among unemployed persons compared with those from other employment groups, most drug users in 2008 were employed. Of the estimated 17.8 million current illegal drug users aged 18 or older in 2008, 12.9 million (72.7 percent) were employed either full or part time. The number of unemployed illegal drug users increased from 1.3 million in 2007 to 1.8 million in 2008, primarily because of an overall increase in the number of unemployed persons between 2007 and 2008.
