Among adults, the rates of past month alcohol use were higher in large metropolitan areas than in rural areas, while there were no differences in heavy use rates across these county types.

Among 12 to 17 year olds who had past year MDE, 34.6 percent had used illegal drugs during the same period. This was higher than the 18.2 percent of teens who did not have past year MDE who used illegal drugs during the past year. This pattern was similar for specific types of illegal drug use, including marijuana, cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription type psychotherapeutics.

Slightly more than half of Americans aged 12 or older reported being current drinkers of alcohol in the 2007 survey (51.1 percent). This translates to an estimated 126.8 million people, which was similar to the 2006 estimate of 125.3 million people (50.9 percent).

The rate of current alcohol use among teens aged 12 to 17 declined from 17.6 percent in 2004 to 16.5 percent in 2005. Youth binge drinking also declined during that period, from 11.1 to 9.9 percent, but heavy drinking did not change significantly (2.7 percent in 2004 and 2.4 percent in 2005).

In recent years, the U.S. drug "czar" Barry McCaffrey made the recommendation that would make Methadone more readily available to patients by allowing physicians to prescribe it like any other medication. This is common practice in Great Britain, Germany, Australia, and other countries.

In 2005, an estimated 71.5 million Americans aged 12 or older were current (past month) users of a tobacco product. This represents 29.4 percent of the population in that age range.
