Oakland, California

Introduction to Oakland, California

Oakland, located in west central California across the bay from San Francisco, is the state's eighth-largest city. Originally settled in 1820 and named after the huge oak trees found in the area, Oakland grew dramatically during the gold rush of 1849 and was incorporated as a city in 1854. About 50,000 refugees fled to Oakland after the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, many settling there permanently. The opening of the (San Francisco-to-Oakland) Bay Bridge in 1936 helped the city's growth; during World War I, Oakland was a major shipbuilding center, attracting a huge blue-collar work force.

Today, Oakland is a major center of commerce and industry, home to Fortune 500 companies such as Clorox and Golden West Financial, and around 400,000 people in just 56 square miles of land. Along with San Francisco, San Jose and several smaller communities, Oakland is part of the Bay Area known for its thriving economy and world-class cultural attractions.

Oakland Culture

The Oakland Museum offers art, natural sciences and California history under one roof, along with scenic gardens and ponds. The city is also home to the Ebony Museum of Art (for African American works), the Pardee Home Museum (historic architecture) and the Chabot Space and Science Center. A more sophisticated scene in San Francisco, with its plethora of art and music venues, is just 10 miles away. Wine lovers flock to Sonoma and Napa to the north.

Oakland Sports and Leisure

Oaklanders are passionate about their sports, supporting three major league teams. Just south of the downtown area, Network Associates Coliseum hosts major league baseball's Oakland Athletics and the NFL's Oakland Raiders. Next door, the recently renovated Arena in Oakland is home to the NBA's Golden State Warriors. For big-time college football, the University of California at Berkeley is just 5 miles to the north.

Oakland Outdoors

Plenty of outdoor diversions are available in and around Oakland. Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach, right on Oakland's side of San Francisco Bay, is a convenient and popular area for swimming, picnicking and sporting activities. Oakland's Lake Merritt, America's largest urban saltwater lake, is a great spot for boating, jogging and bird watching (it's also the oldest bird refuge in the country). Briones Regional Park, about 12 miles northwest of downtown Oakland, has more than 5,000 acres of wilderness, wildlife and trails for hikers, runners, and horseback riders. For a winter getaway, skiing and snow sports are available within a 2-hour drive at a Lake Tahoe and other Sierra Nevada Mountain resorts.

Oakland at Night

Oakland has an exciting nightlife, with many entertainment options in Jack London Square along the waterfront. Plenty of restaurants, bars and clubs are available within the downtown area and along San Pablo Avenue in neighboring Berkeley and Albany to the north. And there's always San Francisco just across the Bay.

Do you have a problem with drug or alcohol addiction and live in Oakland, California? Are you concerned about a family member in Oakland, who has a problem like this? Whatever your situation it's easy to believe that you're alone with this . . . that, somehow, you have to solve the problem all on your own. That is not the case. We care about you - and will help you find an Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehab Center in Oakland, suited to your specific treatment needs. You don't have to deal with drug addiction or alcoholism on your own!

A Drug Rehab or Alcohol Treatment Center in Oakland, is a good option for the treatment of drug addiction and alcoholism. The goal of an Alcohol Rehab or Drug Treatment Center in Oakland, CA. is to direct the initial treatment plan toward the ability of the individual to stop using drugs and/or alcohol and hence avoid the psychological, legal, financial, social, and physical consequences that are usually associated with drug addiction and alcoholism.

There are many different addiction treatment approaches such as Long-term Treatment Facilities, Outpatient Treatment, Short-term Drug Treatment Centers, Inpatient Treatment Facilities, support group meetings, drug counseling, halfway houses and sober living.

Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Centers in Oakland, typically focus on the two-fold nature of drug addiction and alcoholism: physical and psychological addiction. Physical addiction can be treated by a detoxification program in Oakland, California with treatment procedure to assist with the painful withdrawal symptoms which manifest themselves when a person discontinues the consumption of a drug or drugs that they are addicted to. With habitual use of a psychoactive substance the brain gradually adapts to the presence of the drug so the desired effect becomes minimal. This is how physical tolerance develops to drugs such as heroin, amphetamines, cocaine, nicotine and alcohol to name a few. It also explains why more and more of the drug is needed to get the same effect with habitual use of an addictive drug. The abrupt cessation of an addictive drug can lead to serious withdrawal symptoms where the body may take weeks or months (depending on the drug involved) to return to normal function. The withdrawal symptoms from certain substances, such as heroin, can induce severe and painful withdrawal symptoms, and be quite prolonged.

A Drug Rehab or Alcohol Rehabilitation Program in Oakland, will not only provide the person with a professional detox but also provide an Alcohol Rehabilitation or Drug Treatment Center for the psychological issues inevitably underlying all drug and alcohol addiction problems, so as to decrease the chances of relapse and increase the chances of a clean and sober life.

An Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehabilitation Facility in Oakland, CA. is more likely to be one of the most successful methods for treating an individual with a severe drug addiction problem. Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Facilities in Oakland, are designed to deliver a comprehensive treatment curriculum and assist a person in every facet of their life 24 hours a day.

For a person to make a successful recovery, they must acquire new knowledge, abilities and 'life skills'. This new knowledge, abilities and life skills must be directed toward strategies for returning home to Oakland, from a Drug Treatment or Alcohol Rehab Center and encountering old drug using acquaintances in Oakland - as well as ways to handle the many reminders and triggers of their past drug using days in Oakland. These triggers can produce memories which can produce psychological stressors. These psychological stressors often hinder the recovering addict, making it very difficult for them to feel as though they have control over their actions concerning drug using impulses. This is because research into the brain of addicts shows changes in the way their brain functions long after they have discontinued using drugs and/or alcohol. This is the main reason why even an individual with will power as strong as steel may find it extremely difficult to overcome drug addiction or alcoholism without professional addiction treatment. With so many obstacles such as triggers, drug cravings, and changes in the way their brain functions due to habitual drug use, it is no surprise why so many people attend an Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Program each year to successfully recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.

There are many reasons why a person should enroll into an Alcohol Rehabilitation or Drug Rehab Program in Oakland. A few of the many reasons are: the inability to control or eliminate their drinking or drug use, alienating their friends and family, legal problems, severe depression and general unhappiness due to excessive drug or alcohol use.

Persons aged 12 to 25 accounted for almost 60 percent (57.8 percent) of the total number of persons needing but not receiving treatment for an illegal drug use problem. However, that group represented only 23 percent of the total population aged 12 or older.
