Interesting Facts and Statistics:

The head of the poison control center reported that cathinone, which is the parent substance of the drugs that are currently being used in the manufacturing of bath salts, comes from a plant is Africa and is regulated; he stated that MDPV and mephedrone are made in a lab and that they are not regulated because they are not being marketed for human consumption.

Ecstasy is synthetic-it doesn't come from a plant like marijuana does. Ecstasy users often make the drug in secret "labs"-in trailers, basements, and even kitchens-hidden around the country.

Perceived risk is measured by NSDUH as the percentage reporting that there is great risk in the substance use behavior. The percentage of teens aged 12 to 17 perceiving great risk in smoking marijuana once or twice a week increased from 51.5 percent in 2002 to 55.0 percent in 2005, but dropped to 53.1 percent in 2008. A decline from 2005 to 2008 also was observed for using LSD once or twice a week (76.2 percent in 2002, 76.1 percent in 2005, and 73.9 percent in 2008). Between 2002 and 2008, the percentages who reported great risk in using alcohol and cigarettes increased. In 2002, 63.1 percent of teens reported great risk in smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day, and in 2008 the percentage increased to 69.7 percent. In 2002, 38.2 percent reported great risk in binge drinking once or twice a week, and in 2008 the percentage increased to 40.5 percent.

First use of stimulants increased steadily during the last decade, from 219,000 in 1991 to 697,000 in 2000. Incidence levels this high had not been observed since the mid-1970s, when incidence peaked at 646,000 new users in 1974.

The national prevalence rate for the use of cocaine in the past year among all persons aged 12 or older was 2.5 percent. Because cocaine is one of the substances included in the "any illegal drug other than marijuana" category, it is useful to compare the rankings of States with respect to these two substance measures. In 2002, only five of the States with the 10 highest rates of past month use of an illegal drug other than marijuana (aged 12 or older) also had past year rates of cocaine use (aged 12 or older) that were in the top fifth. The District of Columbia had the highest rate of past year cocaine use both among persons aged 12 or older and those aged 26 or older, but it was in the lowest fifth for those aged 12 to 17 and for those aged 18 to 25. Colorado was the only State that ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).

A majority of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they disapprove of their peers using substances. In 2008, 89.6 percent of teens "strongly" or "somewhat" disapproved of their peers smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day, which was similar to the rate of 89.7 percent in 2007, but higher than the 87.1 percent in 2002. Also in 2008, 82.7 percent strongly or somewhat disapproved of peers using marijuana or hashish once a month or more, which was similar to the 82.9 percent reported in 2007, but was an increase from the 80.4 percent reported in 2002. In addition, 87.0 percent of teens strongly or somewhat disapproved of peers having one or two drinks of an alcoholic beverage nearly every day in 2008, which was similar to the 86.6 percent reported in 2007, but was higher than the 84.7 percent reported in 2002.
