Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
A pregnant woman who uses heroin should not attempt to suddenly stop taking the drug. This can put her baby at increased risk of death. She should consult a health care provider or drug treatment center about treatment with a drug called methadone. Although infants born to mothers taking methadone also have withdrawal symptoms, they can be safely treated in the nursery and generally do better than babies born to women who continue to use heroin.
Methadone is by far one of the most difficult drugs to detox from, since the effects of the drug are long-lasting and it is readily stored in the body's fatty tissues.
The combination of Xanax and alcohol can be fatal; both are central nervous system depressants that slow the activity of the brain, so they should not ever be taken together.
In 2005, an estimated 22.2 million persons (9.1 percent of the population aged 12 or older) were classified with substance dependence or abuse in the past year based on criteria specified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV). Of these, 3.3 million were classified with dependence on or abuse of both alcohol and illegal drugs, 3.6 million were dependent on or abused illegal drugs but not alcohol, and 15.4 million were dependent on or abused alcohol but not illegal drugs.
Across geographic regions in 2006, underage current alcohol use rates were higher in the Northeast (32.0 percent) and Midwest (29.7 percent) than in the South (25.8 percent). The rate in the West (28.1 percent) was similar to rates in the South and Midwest regions, but significantly lower than the rate in the Northeast.
In a recent Canadian study, violence (either accidental, self -inflicted, or perpetrated by others) was the leading cause of amphetamine-related deaths.
