Among teens aged 12 to 17, an estimated 17.3 percent used alcohol in the month prior to the survey interview. This rate was higher than the rate of youth alcohol use reported in 2000 (16.4 percent). Of all teens, 10.6 percent were binge drinkers, and 2.5 percent were heavy drinkers. These are roughly the same percentages as those reported in 2000 (10.4 and 2.6 percent, respectively).

Most of the States in the highest fifth were in the West (six States). Among people who needed but did not receive illegal drug use treatment and felt they needed treatment (based on 2004-2005 combined data), the six most often reported reasons for not receiving treatment were (a) cost or insurance barriers (36.7 percent), (b) not ready to stop using (34.7 percent), (c) stigma (24.4 percent), (d) did not feel the need for treatment at the time or could handle the problem without treatment (16.3 percent), (e) did not know where to go for treatment (16.3 percent), and (f) other access barriers (16.1 percent).
