No single substance abuse treatment program is appropriate for all individuals. Matching treatment settings and services to each individual's particular needs is critical to the individual's ultimate success in returning to productive functioning in the family, workplace, and society.

The rate of treatment for mental health problems among teens aged 12 to 17 who used illegal drugs in the past year (32.0 percent) was higher than the rate among teens who did not use illegal drugs (19.3 percent).

Most parents are not aware that inhalants are cheap, legal, and readily available, which makes them popular particularly among teenagers.

The percentage of teens aged 12 to 17 indicating great risk in having four or five drinks nearly every day increased from 62.2 percent in 2002 to 64.6 percent in 2006. However, the rates of past month heavy alcohol use among teens aged 12 to 17 were about the same in 2002 (2.5 percent) and 2006 (2.4 percent).

Among teens aged 12 to 17, there were 1.2 million (4.8 percent) who needed treatment for an illegal drug use problem in 2008. Of this group, only 111,000 received treatment at a specialty facility (9.3 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 who needed treatment), leaving 1.1 million teens who needed treatment but did not receive it at a specialty facility.
