Methadone maintenance programs are not the great cure for opiate addiction, as they so often claim; the replacement drug simply maintain a patient's addicted status, doing so under the acceptable terms of society.
Teens aged 12 to 17 who received mental health treatment or counseling in the past year were more likely to use alcohol in the past year than those who did not receive treatment or counseling (39.7 vs. 31.5 percent). Teens receiving mental health treatment or counseling in the past year also were more likely to have smoked cigarettes in the past year (25.8 vs. 14.9 percent).
Cigarette initiation increased from 2.4 million in 1991 to 3.5 million in 1996, then decreased to 2.8 million in 1999. Initiation of cigarette use among teens aged 12 to 17 significantly decreased from 2.0 million in 1999 to 1.6 million in 2000, continuing a decline observed since 1996.
