Interesting Facts and Statistics:

From 2002 to 2006, the rate of current use of marijuana among young adults aged 18 to 25 declined from 17.3 to 16.3 percent. Past month nonmedical use of prescription-type drugs among young adults increased from 5.4 percent in 2002 to 6.4 percent in 2006. This was primarily due to an increase in the rate of pain reliever use, which was 4.1 percent in 2002 and 4.9 percent in 2006. However, nonmedical use of tranquilizers also increased over the 5-year period (from 1.6 to 2.0 percent).

Past month illegal drug use also was associated with the level of past month alcohol use. Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2005 who were heavy drinkers (i.e., drank five or more drinks on the same occasion [i.e., at the same time or within a couple of hours of each other] on each of 5 or more days in the past 30 days), 59.9 percent also were current illegal drug users, which was higher than among nondrinkers (5.0 percent).

Hepatitis is common among amphetamine users who regularly employ a needle; AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) may spread in the same way.

While in a drug rehabilitation program the addict will detox off the drug or drugs they are addicted to and begin to experience what it feels like to live a life drug-free. In rehab, recovering addicts are in a supportive drug-free environment. They are able to address the issues that bought them to rehab. Often times, they will work one on one with trained counselors as well as in groups. Being surrounded by others in the recovery process provides them with many shoulders to lean on, not to mention the treatment benefit of professionally trained staff.

Ecstasy initiation remained essentially unchanged from 2006 (860,000) to 2007 (781,000), but was lower in 2007 than in 2002 (1.2 million).

Among adults aged 50 to 59, the rate of current illegal drug use increased between 2002 and 2005, then remained unchanged in 2006. For those aged 50 to 54, the rate increased from 3.4 in 2002 to 6.0 percent in 2006. Among those aged 55 to 59, current illegal drug use showed a mixed trend with no significant difference between the rates in 2002 and 2006. These patterns and trends may partially reflect the aging into these age groups of the baby boom cohort, whose lifetime rates of illegal drug use are higher than those of older cohorts.
