Rancho Cordova, California

Introduction to Rancho Cordova, California

The California city of Rancho Cordova is located in Sacramento County, about 12 miles east of the state capital of Sacramento. Situated on U.S. Route 50, the city is bounded on the north by the American River and on the west by the city of Rosemont.

Incorporated in 2003, Rancho Cordova is one of California's newest cities. The city's history stretches back to the Gold Rush era of mid 19th century California and the days of the Pony Express. Mills Station, one of the local stopping points for the Pony Express, is a city landmark which is now being renovated into a community center. Another city landmark is Mather Field, a former Air Force base used during World War II for pilot, navigator, observer, and bombardier training; and also used as a stopover location for troops, aircraft, and materials bound for combat duty in the Pacific. No longer an Air Force base, the site today is the home of the Mather Regional Park and Mather Airport, now a Sacramento County asset converted to civilian use. Rancho Cordova is also home today to a local campus of the University of Phoenix.

Rancho Cordova Points of Interest

Located in the heart of Rancho Cordova is the Mathew Kilgore Cemetery, an historic site established in 1874 which contains plots of many of the city's pioneer founding families. Mather Regional Park comprises more than 1,600 acres of a variety of California valley wildlife. The site is home to Mather Golf Course, an eighteen-hole championship course which is one of the most popular in the area. Outdoor recreation can be found at the American River Parkway, which accommodates a wide variety of aquatic activities including rafting, kayaking and salmon fishing; as well as biking, hiking, and horseback riding. Only minutes away from Rancho Cordova is the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary, a small unique California zoo which also serves as a sanctuary for some common and uncommon animals, both wild and domestic.
