In 2006, there were an estimated 24.9 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States with SPD in the past year. This represents 11.3 percent of all adults in this country, a rate equal the rate of SPD in 2005.
The rate of current illegal drug use in metropolitan areas was higher than the rate in nonmetropolitan areas in 2006. The rates were 8.7 percent in large metropolitan counties, 8.3 percent in small metropolitan counties, and 6.8 percent in nonmetropolitan counties as a group. Within nonmetropolitan areas, counties that were urbanized had a rate of 7.1 percent, less urbanized counties had a rate of 6.5 percent, while completely rural counties had a rate of 7.8 percent.
