Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
In 2008, the prevalence of current use of a tobacco product among persons aged 12 or older was 13.9 percent for Asians, 21.3 percent for Hispanics, 28.6 percent for blacks, 30.4 percent for whites, 37.3 percent for persons who reported two or more races, and 48.7 percent for American Indians or Alaska Natives. There were no statistically significant changes in past month use of a tobacco product between 2007 and 2008 for any of these racial/ethnic groups. Among the specific tobacco products, smokeless tobacco use in the past month among blacks increased from 0.7 percent in 2007 to 1.4 percent in 2008.
Marijuana is made from the dried, shredded leaves, flowers, and other parts of a plant in the genus Cannabis.
Both new and experienced users risk overdosing on heroin because it is impossible for them to know the purity of the heroin they are using. (Heroin sold on the street often is mixed with other substances such as sugar, starch, or quinine. An added risk results when heroin is mixed with poisons such as strychnine.) Heroin overdoses--which can result whether the drug is snorted, smoked, or injected--can cause slow and shallow breathing, convulsions, coma, and even death.
The neurotoxin effects of long term inhalant abuse can include damage to the brain that is involved in controlling cognition, movement and vision.
The rate of illegal drug use in the past year was higher among teens aged 12 to 17 who received mental health treatment or counseling in the past year than among those who did not receive treatment or counseling (28.8 vs. 17.0 percent, respectively). This pattern also was observed for marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription-type psychotherapeutics.
Nationally, 6.2 percent of all persons aged 12 or older reported using marijuana in the past month in 2002.2003 (Table B.3). Because marijuana is the predominant substance used by those using an illegal drug, States that had high prevalence rates for any illegal drug also had high prevalence rates for past month use of marijuana. Eight out of ten States in the top fifth for use of an illegal drug for persons aged 12 or older also were ranked in the top fifth for past month use of marijuana. In the 12 to 17 age group, seven States were in the top fifth for both use of any illegal drug and use of marijuana: Colorado, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Vermont. Eight States were common to the top fifth for past month marijuana use among persons aged 12 or older and teens aged 12 to 17: Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The States with the lowest rates of past month use of marijuana among persons aged 12 or older were in the South: Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas. The other States in the lowest fifth were Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, New Jersey, and Utah .
