In 2006, adults aged 18 or older with MDE in the past year were more likely than those without MDE to have used an illegal drug in the past year (27.7 vs. 12.9 percent). A similar pattern was observed for specific types of past year illegal drug use, such as marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription type psychotherapeutics.

Men and women have been reported to have similar rates of non medical use of prescription drugs. An exception that has been reported to be found is among youth that are 12-17 year-olds.
