The percentage of teens who reported that drugs would be easy to obtain if they wanted some was associated with age, with perceived availability increasing with age. For example, in 2005, 22.0 percent of those aged 12 or 13 said it would be fairly or very easy to obtain marijuana compared with 53.8 percent of those aged 14 or 15 and 75.5 percent of those aged 16 or 17.
In addition to the initial feeling of euphoria, the short-term effects of heroin include a warm flushing of the skin, dry mouth, and heavy extremities.
The rate of current alcohol use among teens aged 12 to 17 declined from 17.6 percent in 2004 to 16.5 percent in 2005. Youth binge drinking also declined during that period, from 11.1 to 9.9 percent, but heavy drinking did not change significantly (2.7 percent in 2004 and 2.4 percent in 2005).
In 2005, there were 3.4 million teens aged 12 to 17 years (13.7 percent of the population aged 12 to 17 years old) who had at least one MDE in their lifetime and 2.2 million teens (8.8 percent) who had MDE during the past year.
