The rate of binge alcohol use was lowest among Asians (12.7 percent). Rates for other racial/ethnic groups were 20.3 percent for blacks, 20.8 percent for persons reporting two or more races, 23.4 percent for whites, 23.7 percent for Hispanics, 25.7 percent for Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders, and 32.8 percent for American Indians or Alaska Natives.
A majority of teens (90.2 percent) reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their trying marijuana or hashish once or twice. Current marijuana use was much less prevalent among teens who perceived strong parental disapproval for trying marijuana or hashish once or twice than for those who did not (4.6 vs. 27.0 percent).
More than 1 in 10 Americans aged 12 or older in 2001 (25.1 million persons) drove under the influence of alcohol at least once in the 12 months prior to the interview. Between 2000 and 2001, the rate of driving under the influence of alcohol increased from 10.0 to 11.1 percent. During the 1990s, heroin incidence rates rose to a level not reached since the 1970s. The annual number of new users ranged from 55,000 to 69,000 between 1989 and 1992. Cigar use in the past month declined to 4.2 percent of teens in 2005 from the 2004 estimate of 4.8 percent. Past month smokeless tobacco use was reported by 2.1 percent of teens in 2005, similar to estimates since 2002.
