Santa Clara was given its name from the Mission Santa Clara de Asis, the eighth of twenty one missions that the Spanish created in California. Although the mission was founded in 1777, the city was not officially made part of the U.S. until 1852. The city is part of the San Francisco Bay metropolitan area, home to almost eight million people, making it the fifth largest metropolitan area in the United States.
Santa Clara is located in the center of the Silicon Valley, northwest of San Jose, and fifty minutes southeast of San Francisco. The city is a past winner of the National Civic League's coveted "All-America City Award". In addition, the community is home to five Fortune 1000 business headquarters. Some major companies located in Santa Clara include Intel, Applied Materials, Sun Microsystems, and NVIDIA. Many other major companies are located in surrounding Silicon Valley communities.
Santa Clara is convenient to freeways including the 101, 280, 880 and more. Santa Clara is also only ten minutes away from San Jose International Airport (SJC).
