Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
The percentage of persons estimated to be dependent on illegal drugs in the past year was about 65 percent of those who were estimated to be dependent on or abused illegal drugs in the past year. State estimates for illegal drug dependence for persons aged 12 or older ranged from 1.6 percent in Iowa to 3.0 percent in the District of Columbia. The highest rates of illegal drug dependence were among persons aged 18 to 25, with the highest rate in Massachusetts (8.3 percent).
From 2002 to 2006, the rate of current use of marijuana among young adults aged 18 to 25 declined from 17.3 to 16.3 percent. Past month nonmedical use of prescription-type drugs among young adults increased from 5.4 percent in 2002 to 6.4 percent in 2006. This was primarily due to an increase in the rate of pain reliever use, which was 4.1 percent in 2002 and 4.9 percent in 2006. However, nonmedical use of tranquilizers also increased over the 5-year period (from 1.6 to 2.0 percent).
In 81.7 percent of the instances in 2007 2008 where nonmedical users of prescription pain relievers aged 12 or older obtained the drugs from a friend or relative for free, the individuals indicated that their friend or relative had obtained the drugs from just one doctor. Only 1.6 percent reported that the friend or relative had bought the drugs from a drug dealer or other stranger.
Most binge and heavy alcohol users were employed in 2006. Among 54.0 million adult binge drinkers, 42.9 million (79.4 percent) were employed either full or part time. Among 16.3 million heavy drinkers, 12.9 million (79.2 percent) were employed.
In 2005, the use of smokeless tobacco in the past month was reported by 3.5 percent of persons aged 18 or older who had not completed high school, 4.3 percent of those who completed high school but did not attend college, and 3.4 percent of those who attended some college. The prevalence among college graduates (1.9 percent) was lower than among the other groups.
In 2005, there were 2.1 million persons who had used marijuana for the first time within the past 12 months; this averages to approximately 6,000 initiates per day. This estimate was not significantly different from the numbers in 2004 (2.1 million), 2003 (2.0 million), and 2002 (2.2 million).
