A recent study placed Ecstasy at number 18 in the list of 20 popular drugs.
Most binge and heavy alcohol users were employed in 2008. Among 55.9 million adult binge drinkers, 44.6 million (79.7 percent) were employed either full or part time. Among 16.8 million heavy drinkers, 13.1 million (78.0 percent) were employed.
In 2007, there were 9.9 million persons aged 12 or older who reported driving under the influence of illegal drugs during the past year. This corresponds to 4.0 percent of the population aged 12 or older, similar to the rate in 2006 (4.2 percent), but lower than the rate in 2002 (4.7 percent). In 2007, the rate was highest among young adults aged 18 to 25 (12.5 percent).
Rates of substance dependence or abuse were associated with level of education in 2008. Among adults aged 18 or older, those who graduated from a college or university had a lower rate of dependence or abuse (7.0 percent) than those who graduated from high school (9.4 percent), those who did not graduate from high school (9.5 percent), and those with some college (10.5 percent).
States in the top fifth for needing but not receiving treatment for alcohol problems among persons aged 12 or older were primarily Western (four States) or Midwestern (four States). Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, and South Dakota ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older) for needing but not receiving treatment for alcohol problems. Arizona, the District of Columbia, New Mexico, and Rhode Island were ranked in the highest quintile for both needing but not receiving treatment for an alcohol problem and needing but not receiving treatment for an illegal drug problem among persons aged 12 or older. Similarly, Alabama, New Jersey, and West Virginia were the only three States that ranked in the lowest quintile for both measures among all persons aged 12 or older. South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming ranked in the lowest fifth for needing but not receiving treatment for illegal drug problems, but ranked in the highest fifth for needing but not receiving treatment for alcohol problems among persons aged 12 or older.
