One of the biggest red flags in terms of Vicodin addiction is when prescription for the drug has been written by more than one physician; this is often referred to as "physician hopping".
Of the 6.3 million people who needed but did not receive specialty treatment for illegal drug use in 2005, there were 601,000 (9.6 percent) who reported that they felt they needed treatment for their illegal drug use problem. Of the 601,000 persons who felt they needed treatment, 175,000 (29.1 percent) reported that they made an effort, and 426,000 (70.9 percent) reported making no effort to get treatment.
Individuals who make the decision go through a medically assisted withdrawal rehab to minimize the discomfort of withdrawal, but do not receive any further treatment, have been known to perform about the same in terms of their drug use as those who never had any form of professional help. Studies have consistently indicated that attending a drug rehab is an effective tool to reduce drug intake. Researchers also have found that drug abusers who have been through a drug rehab are more likely to consistently maintain employment following the completion of the program.
Long term methamphetamine abuse can often lead to homelessness, divorce, loss of a job or standing or good standing in the community, criminal behavior, and loss of control of over one's own thought processes.
Among adults aged 50 to 59, the rate of current illegal drug use increased from 2.7 to 4.6 percent between 2002 and 2008. For those aged 50 to 54, the rate increased from 3.4 percent in 2002 to 6.0 percent in 2006, then dropped to 4.3 percent in 2008, not significantly different from the rate in either 2002 or 2006. Among those aged 55 to 59, current illegal drug use showed an increase from 1.9 percent in 2002 to 5.0 percent in 2008. These patterns and trends may partially reflect the aging into these age groups of members of the baby boom cohort, whose rates of illegal drug use have been higher than those of older cohorts.
The number of people who felt they needed treatment and made an effort to get it among those who needed but did not receive treatment was not statistically different in 2005 (296,000) from the number reported in 2004 (441,000).
