Once a drug or alcohol addiction has developed, many individuals find themselves unable to cease using the drug of choice without enrollment into a residential addiction recovery program to receive the treatment that they both need and deserve.
Current illegal drug use varied by race/ethnicity in 2006. Among persons aged 12 or older, the rate was lowest among Asians (3.6 percent). Rates were 13.7 percent for American Indians or Alaska Natives, 9.8 percent for blacks, 8.9 percent for persons reporting two or more races, 8.5 percent for whites, 7.5 percent for Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders, and 6.9 percent for Hispanics.
In 2008, there were 2.9 million persons aged 12 or older who had used cigars for the first time in the past 12 months, which was similar to the 2007 estimate (3.1 million). However, the 2008 estimate reflects a significant decrease when compared with the 2005 estimate (3.3 million). Among past year cigar initiates aged 12 to 49, the average age at first use was 20.0 years in 2008, which was not significantly different from the estimate in 2007 (20.5 years).
In 2005, past month use of any illegal drug, cigarettes, and alcohol was lower among teens aged 12 to 17 who reported that their parents always or sometimes engaged in monitoring behaviors than among teens whose parents "seldom" or "never" engaged in such behaviors. For example, the rate of past month use of any illegal drug was 8.1 percent for teens whose parents always or sometimes helped with homework compared with 17.4 percent among teens who indicated that their parents seldom or never helped. Rates for current cigarette smoking were 9.3 and 17.7 percent for the two groups of teens, respectively, and rates of past month alcohol use were 14.5 versus 27.2 percent.
In 2007, there were 775,000 persons aged 12 or older who had used inhalants for the first time within the past 12 months; 66.3 percent were under age 18 when they first used. There was no significant change in the number of inhalant initiates from 2006 to 2007.
