Methadone maintenance treatment clinics have been hampered by government regulations that require most patients to come to the clinic a minimum of five days a week. This requirement makes it difficult for patients' to maintain employment, as they must often leave their job and travel some distance to keep appointments.
The rate of underage drinking remained the same in 2004 as in 2002 and 2003. About 10.8 million persons aged 12 to 20 reported drinking alcohol in the month prior to the survey interview in 2004 (28.7 percent of this age group). Of these, nearly 7.4 million (19.6 percent) were binge drinkers, and 2.4 million (6.3 percent) were heavy drinkers.
Early effects of LSD can often include muscle weakness, muscle twitching and impaired coordination. Later effects may include distortion of senses and confusion in time and thought processes.
Because amphetamines suppress appetite, chronic heavy users generally fail to eat properly and thus develop various illnesses related to vitamin deficiencies and malnutrition.
In 2006, among the 4.0 million persons aged 12 or older who received treatment for alcohol or illegal drug use in the past year, 2.2 million persons received treatment at a self help group, and 1.6 million received treatment at a rehabilitation facility as an outpatient. There were 1.1 million persons who received treatment at a mental health center as an outpatient, 934,000 persons who received treatment at a rehabilitation facility as an inpatient, 816,000 at a hospital as an inpatient, 610,000 at a private doctor's office, 420,000 at a prison or jail, and 397,000 at an emergency room. None of these estimates changed significantly between 2005 and 2006.
A majority of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they disapprove of their peers using substances. In 2008, 89.6 percent of teens "strongly" or "somewhat" disapproved of their peers smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day, which was similar to the rate of 89.7 percent in 2007, but higher than the 87.1 percent in 2002. Also in 2008, 82.7 percent strongly or somewhat disapproved of peers using marijuana or hashish once a month or more, which was similar to the 82.9 percent reported in 2007, but was an increase from the 80.4 percent reported in 2002. In addition, 87.0 percent of teens strongly or somewhat disapproved of peers having one or two drinks of an alcoholic beverage nearly every day in 2008, which was similar to the 86.6 percent reported in 2007, but was higher than the 84.7 percent reported in 2002.
