Interesting Facts and Statistics:

Methadone generally has the same side effect as other opiates, including the development of tolerance and drug dependence. The histamines that are released by Methadone can cause hypotension or bronchospasms. Other symptoms of the drug may include constipation, nausea, sedation, vertigo, and edema.

Although Methadone was originally developed as a pain killer, but now its primary use is the sedation, maintenance, and detoxification of narcotic addicts.

An estimated 8.6 million people aged 12 or older (3.4 percent) were current users of illegal drugs other than marijuana in 2008. The majority of these (6.2 million persons or 2.5 percent of the population) used psychotherapeutic drugs nonmedically. An estimated 4.7 million persons used pain relievers nonmedically in the past month in 2008, 1.8 million used tranquilizers, 904,000 used stimulants, and 234,000 used sedatives.

Another one of the risks of heroin use is that all heroin users--not just those who inject the drug-- becoming addicted. Individuals who abuse heroin over time develop a tolerance for the drug, meaning that they must use increasingly larger doses to achieve the same intensity or effect they experienced when they first began using the drug. Heroin ceases to produce feelings of pleasure in users who develop tolerance; instead, these users must continue taking the drug simply to feel normal. Addicted individuals who stop using the drug may experience withdrawal symptoms, which include heroin craving, restlessness, muscle and bone pain, and vomiting.

An extremely large percentage of individuals that are unemployed are using an illegal drug, according to a recent government survey.

In 2008, an estimated 22.2 million persons aged 12 or older were classified with substance dependence or abuse in the past year (8.9 percent of the population aged 12 or older). Of these, 3.1 million were classified with dependence on or abuse of both alcohol and illegal drugs, 3.9 million were dependent on or abused illegal drugs but not alcohol, and 15.2 million were dependent on or abused alcohol but not illegal drugs.
