The number of recent new users of methamphetamine among persons aged 12 or older was 95,000 in 2008. This estimate was significantly lower than the estimate in 2002 (299,000), 2003 (260,000), 2004 (318,000), 2005 (192,000), 2006 (259,000), and 2007 (157,000). The average age of new methamphetamine users aged 12 to 49 in 2008 was 19.2 years, which was not significantly different from the average ages between 2002 and 2007.

Rates for illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse show substantial variation by age. The rate for illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse was 0.9 percent at age 12, and rates increased with age until the highest rate (22.8 percent) was reached at age 21. After age 21, the rates declined with age. The rate for persons aged 26 or older was 5.4 percent; the rate for persons aged 18 to 25 was 18.4 percent; and the rate for teens aged 12 to 17 was 7.8 percent.

Dilaudid can be used intravenously, taken orally in liquid or tablet form; the drug is also made available as a suppository.

Often these heroin users are under the misconception that if they do not inject the drug they will not become addicted. Those who have entered rehab to recover from heroin addiction include every method of heroin user. Annual admissions to substance abuse treatment for primary heroin abuse increased from 228,000 in 1995 to 254,000 in 2005; however, the proportion of primary heroin admissions remained steady at about 14 to 15 percent of all admissions. Between 1995 and 2005, inhalation and injection accounted for at least 94 percent of annual primary heroin admissions.

Rates of substance dependence or abuse in 2005 for persons aged 12 or older showed evidence of differences by region. The rates were 9.7 percent in the West, 9.6 percent in the Midwest, 8.8 percent in the South, and 8.5 percent in the Northeast.

In 2006, an estimated 22.6 million persons aged 12 or older were classified with substance dependence or abuse in the past year (9.2 percent of the population aged 12 or older). Of these, 3.2 million were classified with dependence on or abuse of both alcohol and illegal drugs, 3.8 million were dependent on or abused illegal drugs but not alcohol, and 15.6 million were dependent on or abused alcohol but not illegal drugs.
