Persons who made no effort to receive treatment were more likely to report that they were not ready to stop using (45.3 percent) as a reason for not receiving treatment than persons who made an effort to receive treatment (21.1 percent) (2004-2005 combined data). Among those who made no effort to receive treatment, 26.3 percent reported stigma and 31.0 percent reported cost and insurance barriers as reasons for not receiving treatment.
Among adults aged 18 or older in 2008, past year prevalence of MDE with severe impairment was higher among unemployed persons (6.6 percent) than among persons employed full time (3.2 percent). Past year prevalence of MDE was 4.8 percent among persons employed part time and 5.7 percent among persons retired or otherwise not in the labor force.
In 2004, 6.0 million persons were current users of psychotherapeutic drugs taken nonmedically (2.5 percent). These include 4.4 million who used pain relievers, 1.6 million who used tranquilizers, 1.2 million who used stimulants, and 0.3 million who used sedatives. These estimates are all similar to the corresponding estimates for 2003.
In 2007, 56.3 percent of current drinkers aged 12 to 20 reported that their last use of alcohol in the past month occurred in someone else's home, and 29.4 percent reported that it had occurred in their own home. About one third (30.2 percent) paid for the alcohol the last time they drank, including 8.2 percent who purchased the alcohol themselves and 21.8 percent who gave money to someone else to purchase it. Among those who did not pay for the alcohol they last drank, 37.2 percent got it from an unrelated person aged 21 or older, 20.7 percent from another person under 21 years of age, and 19.5 percent got it from a parent, guardian, or other adult family member.
