Opiates were initially intended for use in the medical community, but quickly gained popularity among recreational drug users. Opiates are now some of the most commonly abused drugs in the world.
When methamphetamine is sold in powdered form, it can be mixed with water to inject or sprinkled on tobacco to be smoked; individuals also smoke meth that has been sprinkled on a joint of marijuana.
From 1898 through to 1910 heroin was marketed as a non-addictive morphine substitute and cough suppressant. Bayer marketed heroin as a cure for morphine addiction before it was discovered that heroin is rapidly metabolized into morphine, and as such, "heroin" was basically only a quicker acting form of morphine. The company was somewhat embarrassed by this new finding and it became a historical blunder for Bayer.
Side effects from chronic smoking of cocaine include hemoptysis, bronchospasm, pruritus, fever, diffuse alveolar infiltrates without effusions, pulmonary and systemic eosinophiliachest, pain, lung trauma, shortness of breath, sore throat, asthma, hoarse voice, dyspnea, and an aching, flu-like syndrome.
In terms of drug or alcohol addiction, withdrawal can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks and may include many uncomfortable symptoms, such as nausea or vomiting, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety.
