In terms of the various causes of drug addiction, it is not likely that anyone would ever begin to use drugs or alcohol with the intention of becoming addicted. Experimentation is often the first factor that draws many individuals to try drugs. They want to experience the "high," and the sense of euphoria that comes with drug use.

In 2005, 9.9 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 were current illegal drug users: 6.8 percent used marijuana, 3.3 percent used prescription-type drugs nonmedically, 1.2 percent used inhalants, 0.8 percent used hallucinogens, and 0.6 percent used cocaine.

Meth manufacture creates toxic fumes and hazardous waste by-products that can poison water, pollute lakes, permeate walls and flooring and cause fires and explosions.

From 2005 to 2006, the rate of past month nonmedical use of prescription type psychotherapeutic drugs increased from 2.8 to 3.2 percent among boys aged 12 or older, mirroring an increase in the nonmedical use of pain relievers (from 2.1 to 2.5 percent). The rate of current heroin use also increased among boys (from 0.1 to 0.2 percent).
