Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Opioids, natural or synthetic classes of drugs that act like morphine, are the most effective pain relievers available. OxyContin is in this class of drugs.
The States in the top fifth for past month use of alcohol among persons aged 12 or older (i.e., highest rates) were primarily in the Northern parts of the United States, including six States in the Northeast, one in the Midwest, and one in the West. The other two were in the South (Maryland and the District of Columbia). All of the States in the lowest fifth were in the South, except for Utah (West region). Utah had the lowest rate (33.0 percent) of past month alcohol use in the Nation. New Jersey had the highest rate for the 12 or older age group (61.1 percent) and among those aged 26 or older (66.3 percent). The highest rate of past month use of alcohol for the 18 to 25 age group was in Rhode Island (75 percent), and North Dakota had the highest rate among teens (24.7 percent). Only the State of Massachusetts ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older) and for all persons aged 12 or older.
Opioid receptors are located in the brain stem, important for automatic processes critical for life, such as breathing, blood pressure, and arousal. Heroin overdoses frequently involve a suppression of respiration.
About 10.1 million persons aged 12 to 20 reported drinking alcohol in the month prior to the survey interview in 2001 (28.5 percent of this age group). Of these, nearly 6.8 million (19.0 percent) were binge drinkers and 2.1 million (6.0 percent) were heavy drinkers. All of these 2001 rates are similar to rates observed in 2000.
Based on 2004-2005 combined data, among persons who needed but did not receive illegal drug or alcohol use treatment, felt they needed treatment, and made an effort to receive treatment, the four most often reported reasons for not receiving treatment were (a) cost or insurance barriers (44.4 percent), (b) other access barriers (21.2 percent), (c) not ready to stop using (21.1 percent), and (d) stigma (18.5 percent).
The appropriate duration for an individual in drug rehab treatment most often depends on his or her problems and needs. Research indicates that for most individuals in a drug rehab program, the threshold of significant improvement is reached at about 3 months in treatment. After this point is reached, additional drug rehab treatment can only produce further progress toward recovery.
