In 2005, an estimated 71.5 million Americans aged 12 or older were current (past month) users of a tobacco product. This represents 29.4 percent of the population in that age range. Having MDE in the past year was associated with past year substance dependence or abuse. Among adults aged 18 or older who had MDE in 2006, 24.3 percent were dependent on or abused alcohol or illegal drugs, while among adults without MDE only 8.1 percent were dependent on or abused alcohol or illegal drugs. Adults with MDE were more likely than those without MDE to be dependent on or abuse illegal drugs (9.4 vs. 2.1 percent) and alcohol (19.3 vs. 7.0 percent).
Among teens aged 12 to 17, 8.0 percent of Hispanics had MDE in the past year, similar to the rate for non-Hispanic teens (7.9 percent). Also, teens who reported two or more races had a lifetime MDE prevalence of 13.0 percent, while the rates for American Indians or Alaska Natives and whites were 9.3 and 8.1 percent, respectively.
More boys than girls aged 12 to 20 reported binge drinking (19.2 vs. 15.5 percent) and heavy drinking (7.0 vs. 4.0 percent) in 2008. However, rates of current alcohol use were similar by gender (27.1 percent for boys and 25.8 percent for girls).
