Some individuals who abuse prescription medication such as Ativan take sedative type drugs to bring them down after using stimulants such as ecstasy or cocaine; others often take benzodiazepines to enhance the effects of alcohol. Benzodiazepines are also commonly known to be used as replacement drugs when a user's first drug of choice is not available.
The average age at first nonmedical use of psychotherapeutics among recent initiates aged 12 to 49 was 22.2 years. For specific drug classes, the average ages were 20.1 years for stimulants, 21.2 years for pain relievers, 22.9 years for sedatives, and 25.7 years for tranquilizers.
In 2001, approximately 2.0 million (8.6 percent) teens aged 12 to 17 had used inhalants at some time in their lives.
