An individual can develop an addiction to Ambien with regular use of the drug for an extended amount of time, even when it is taken exactly as prescribed. An addiction to the drug will also occur if the user begins to abuse the drug by taking more of the drug than has been prescribed, or by taking it improperly. Examples of improper usage can include crushing the pill and swallowing it, crushing and snorting it, or melting it down for injection.
Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2005, the rate of current illegal drug use was highest among American Indians or Alaska Natives, about twice the overall rate among teens (19.2 vs. 9.9 percent, respectively). The rates for other groups were 11.0 percent among blacks, 10.1 percent among whites, 9.7 percent among those reporting two or more races, 9.4 percent among Hispanics, and 3.3 percent among Asians.
Among young adults aged 18 to 25 years, the rate of past month any illegal drug use increased between 2000 and 2001, rising from 15.9 to 18.8 percent. Increases were evident for current use of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and methamphetamine.
Illegal drug use in 2005 was associated with educational status. Among adults aged 18 or older, the rate of current illegal drug use was lower among college graduates (5.0 percent) compared with those who did not graduate from high school (9.8 percent), high school graduates (8.6 percent), and those with some college (8.9 percent). However, adults who had graduated from college were more likely to have tried illegal drugs in their lifetime when compared with adults who had not completed high school (51.7 vs. 37.7 percent).

Among the 17.8 million people who needed but did not receive treatment for an alcohol use problem in 2005, there were 641,000 (3.6 percent) who felt they needed treatment for their alcohol use problem. Of these, 154,000 (24.0 percent) made an effort but were unable to get treatment, and 487,000 (76.0 percent) did not make an effort to get treatment.
