There were 3.9 million persons aged 12 or older (1.6 percent of the population) who received some kind of treatment for a problem related to the use of alcohol or illegal drugs in 2005. Of these, 1.5 million received treatment for the use of both alcohol and illegal drugs, 0.7 million received treatment for the use of illegal drugs but not alcohol, and 1.3 million received treatment for the use of alcohol but not illegal drugs. (Note that estimates by substance do not add to the total number of persons receiving treatment because the total includes persons who reported receiving treatment but did not report for which substance the treatment was received.)
Of the 20.8 million people in 2008 who were classified as needing substance use treatment but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility in the past year, 1.0 million persons (4.8 percent) reported that they felt they needed treatment for their illegal drug or alcohol use problem. Among adults aged 18 or older, current cigarette use in 2006 was reported by 35.6 percent of those who had not completed high school, 31.9 percent of high school graduates who did not attend college, 27.7 percent of persons with some college, and 14.3 percent of college graduates. Past month cigarette smoking among young adults aged 18 to 25 who had some college decreased from 36.1 percent in 2005 to 33.8 percent in 2006.
Among the 4.7 million adults on probation at some time in the past year, 29.2 percent reported current illegal drug use in 2005. This is higher than the rate of 7.4 percent among adults not on probation in 2005.
