Boulder, Colorado

Introduction to Boulder, Colorado

The Colorado city of Boulder is the county seat of Boulder County and also the county's largest city. Perched at an elevation of 5,400 feet above sea-level, the city is located 30 miles northwest of the Colorado state capital of Denver. Boulder is home to the main campus of the University of Colorado, the state's largest university.

Until the late 1850's, the Boulder Valley was inhabited by Indians, primarily the Southern Arapaho tribe. The first known non-native settlers in the area were gold prospectors who arrived in 1858, when Boulder was still part of the Nebraska Territory. In 1861, the Territory of Colorado was created by the U.S. Congress and in 1871 Boulder (then known as Boulder City) was incorporated as a city. Five years later the University of Colorado at Boulder opened and in that same year (1876) Colorado achieved its statehood. Through the early part of the 20th century, mining and tourism were two of the city's principal industries. Later years saw a different kind of industry with the arrival of the National Bureau of Standards (which today is the National Institute of Standards and Technology, home of the atomic clock) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research. In 1996, the city received notoriety as the locale of the still unsolved mystery of the killing of six-year-old JonBenet Ramsey.

Boulder is often cited as one of the nation's most desirable places to live. The city's natural beauty, abundant recreational options, and lively cultural atmosphere are just a few reasons why. In the year 2006 alone, Boulder received accolades from over 20 national publications for being among the top cities in various categories. Some examples:

  • "Best Cities For Singles" (Ranked #1) Forbes Magazine, July 2006
  • "Best Places to Retire in Style" (Ranked #1) Fortune Magazine, June 2006
  • "Top Biking City" Bicycling Magazine, March 2006
  • "Dream Towns" (Ranked #1) Outside Magazine, Aug. 2006
  • "Best City for Teleworking" (Ranked #1 in small metro area list) Sperling's BestPlaces research firm, March 2006
  • "50 Best places to live" (Ranked #3) Men's Journal, April 2006

To begin with, the city is surrounded by more than 31,000 acres of recreational open space and nature preserves, providing abundant opportunities for biking, hiking and rock climbing. Over 120 miles of trails vary in size and difficulty, from the simple to the technically challenging. The Boulder Creek Path is a 16-mile trail perfect for walking, biking, or in-line skating. Do you live in Boulder, Colorado and have an addiction to drugs or alcohol? Is someone you know or care about battling drug or alcohol addiction and needs help? Drug and alcohol addiction exists everywhere in society today, and when an individual is caught up in addiction it can seem that there is no way out. There is in fact a way out, and it can be found at an Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehabilitation Facility in Boulder.

An Alcohol Rehab or Drug Rehabilitation Facility in Boulder treats drug addiction and alcoholism by teaching the individual how to overcome problems in life with real solutions, and that drugs and alcohol are not the answer. This can empower the individual, and put them in a position to start winning and achieving their goals. The end result of treatment at a Drug Rehab or Alcohol Rehabilitation Facility in Boulder would be the individual being able to work their way through life and its obstacles, without the need or desire to use drugs or alcohol.

Due to the varying needs of individuals seeking treatment, there are a number of treatment programs available in Boulder to care for someone addicted to drugs and/or alcohol. There are Short-term Drug Rehab Centers, Inpatient Drug Treatment Centers, Long-term Drug Treatment Centers, Outpatient Drug Rehab Centers, support group meetings, drug counseling, halfway houses and sober living.

Treatment at a Drug Rehabilitation or Alcohol Rehab Program in Boulder will hone in on the two main causes of addiction, physical and psychological. Over time, the individual's brain adapts to the use of a psychoactive substance, lessening the effect of the drug. Physical tolerance develops as a result. The person ends up having to take more and more drugs or alcohol to try and get back to that first initial high that got them hooked.

Upon commencing treatment, an individual will address the physical aspect of addiction by taking part in a detoxification program in Boulder, Colorado, which will get him through the uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms that are caused by abrupt cessation of a substance. Withdrawal symptoms can typically last for days, weeks or months depending on the type of substance you're dealing with. Heroin withdrawal for example may take quite some time to get through, and is particularly painful. Detoxification along with psychological counseling will get the individual in the right frame of mind to start addressing the psychological issues that are involved with the addiction to drugs or alcohol. This method greatly increases the individual's chances of a successful recovery and prevents relapse.

A Drug Treatment or Alcohol Rehab Center in Boulder, CO. offers a sane environment that is conducive to a successful recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. The individual will be taught how to properly handle life situations and control their own behavior in response to their environment. When the individual returns home following treatment, he will do so with a new mindset on how to engage with friends, family etc. The influences which may have triggered addiction in the individual will not have the same power over him. As part of treatment the individual will have addressed these psychological stressors as a priority and they will no longer have an effect on him.

Studies have shown that an individual who is addicted to drugs and alcohol shows changes in their brain, specifically the way it functions and responds to situations. This is an important reason that professional help at an Alcohol Rehabilitation or Drug Treatment Program in Boulder, CO. is the best option to try and beat addiction.

Someone who is caught up in the destructive cycle of addiction is up against a lot, the odds may seem against him. But they aren't if he pursues treatment at an Alcohol Rehab or Drug Treatment Center in Boulder, CO. Treatment exists so that the addict is given the best chance at a successful recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. There is hope for you or someone you care about. Addiction has a cure, and treatment at an Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehabilitation Facility in Boulder is that cure. Don't wait another minute to get the help you deserve.

Did You Know? ...
Interesting Facts and Statistics:

In 2007, an estimated 22.3 million persons (9.0 percent of the population aged 12 or older) were classified with substance dependence or abuse in the past year based on criteria specified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV). Of these, 3.2 million were classified with dependence on or abuse of both alcohol and illegal drugs, 3.7 million were dependent on or abused illegal drugs but not alcohol, and 15.5 million were dependent on or abused alcohol but not illegal drugs.

The rate of MDE in the past year was higher for adolescent girls (13.3 percent) than for adolescent boys (4.5 percent).

Chronic marijuana use, especially in a very young person, may be a risk marker for addiction stemming from environmental vulnerabilities, such as early exposure to stress or violence.

An individual's perception of the risks of substance use has been shown to be related to whether he or she actually uses the substance (e.g., Bachman, Johnston, & O'Malley, 1998). The national percentage of persons (aged 12 or older) perceiving a great risk of using marijuana once a month increased significantly between 2002 and 2003, from 38.3 to 39.6 percent.

Chunks of clear, high purity methamphetamine resemble rock candy; meth in this form is usually smoked in a small glass pipe.

The chronic use of crystal methamphetamine can cause a rapid increase in the user's heart rate, increased blood pressure, and extensive damage to the small blood vessels in the brain--which could eventually lead to a stroke.
