After dropping from 34.9 percent in 2006 to 31.8 percent in 2007, the rate of current cigarette smoking among female young adults aged 18 to 25 held steady at 31.8 percent in 2008. Between 2002 and 2008, the rate of cigarette use among young adults declined for both boys (from 44.4 to 39.5 percent) and girls (from 37.1 to 31.8 percent).

Most teens aged 12 to 17 believed their parents would "strongly disapprove" of their using substances. In 2005, 91.1 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day, while the remaining 8.9 percent believed their parents would "somewhat disapprove" or "neither approve nor disapprove." A majority of teens (90.2 percent) reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their trying marijuana or hashish once or twice, and 88.9 percent reported their parents would strongly disapprove of their having one or two drinks of an alcoholic beverage nearly every day. These rates of perceived parental disapproval in 2005 were similar to those seen in 2004.

Thus, there were 18.0 million people who needed treatment but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility for an alcohol use problem. Between 2005 and 2006, there were no statistically significant changes in the number and the percentage of persons needing, receiving, or needing but not receiving treatment for an alcohol use problem.
