One of the most important facts about heroin is that using this drug inevitably leads to drug addiction. Heroin addiction is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, and by neurochemical and molecular changes in the user's brain. Heroin also produces profound degrees of tolerance and physical dependence, which are also powerful motivating factors for compulsive use and abuse.

In 2006, current cigarette smoking was more common among unemployed adults aged 18 or older than among adults who were working full time or part time (47.8 vs. 28.8 and 25.4 percent, respectively). Cigar smoking followed a similar pattern, with 11.3 percent of unemployed adults reporting past month use compared with 6.8 percent of full time workers and 5.6 percent of part time workers.

Rates of SPD in 2007 were highest for adults aged 18 to 25 (17.9 percent) and lowest for adults aged 50 or older (7.0 percent).

Among boys aged 18 to 22 in 2008, full time college students and those not enrolled full time in college did not differ significantly in their rates of past month cigar smoking (18.0 and 18.5 percent, respectively). However, cigar use by boys in this age range who were not enrolled full time in college declined from 2007 (21.7 percent) to 2008 (18.5 percent).

Past month marijuana use declined from 2002 to 2005 for both male teens (9.1 to 7.5 percent) and female teens (7.2 to 6.2 percent) .
