The two types of prescription drugs that are most commonly reported to be abused are opioids and benzodiazepines. Opioids are generally the drugs that physicians prescribe to control pain. Benzodiazepines, or tranquilizers, are most commonly used to manage anxiety, but have also been known to be prescribed for insomnia by some doctors. These drugs were both originally developed to be prescribed for short-term use in treating these conditions of pain and anxiety that is in reaction to a specific event; unfortunately, many people like the way these drugs make them feel and take them non-medically long term.

OxyContin users suffering from lung disorders such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure or pre-existing respiratory depression may not realize that OxyContin may suppress the respiratory drive to the point of arrest.

There was an increase in the past year initiates of Ecstasy between 2005 and 2006. The number of Ecstasy initiates in the past year was 1.2 million in 2002, 642,000 in 2003, 607,000 in 2004, 615,000 in 2005, and 860,000 in 2006. Most (70.1 percent) of the recent Ecstasy initiates in 2006 were aged 18 or older at the time they first used Ecstasy. The corresponding figure was 65.9 percent in 2005. Among past year initiates aged 12 to 49, the average age at initiation of Ecstasy in 2006 was 20.6 years, similar to the average age in 2005 (20.7 years).

Because significant tolerance to respiratory depression develops quickly with continued use of heroin and is lost just as quickly during withdrawal, it is often difficult to determine whether a heroin death was an accident, suicide or murder.

As many as half of all babies born to heroin users are born with low birth weight. These babies, many of whom are premature, often suffer from serious health problems during the newborn period, including breathing problems, and are at increased risk of lifelong disabilities.

In 2008, teens aged 12 to 17 who had MDE during the past year were more likely to report daily cigarette use in comparison with those who did not have MDE during the past year (3.6 vs. 1.8 percent). Similarly, teens who had past year MDE were more likely to report heavy use of alcohol than those who did not have MDE (3.4 vs. 1.8 percent).
