Ecstasy became popular initially among young adults in the nightclub scene or at weekend-long dance parties known as raves.
In 2006, current use of a tobacco product among persons aged 12 or older was reported by a higher percentage of boys (36.4 percent) than girls (23.3 percent). Boys also had higher rates of past month use than girls of each specific tobacco product: cigarette smoking (27.8 percent of boys vs. 22.4 percent of girls), cigar smoking (9.3 vs. 2.1 percent), use of smokeless tobacco (6.6 vs. 0.3 percent), and use of pipe tobacco (1.7 vs. 0.2 percent).

Daily cigarette use among current smokers in the 12 to 17 year age group dropped from 26.3 percent in 2007 to 22.3 percent in 2008.
