Among 12 to 17 year olds who had past year MDE in 2008, 37.4 percent had used illegal drugs during the same period, which was higher than the rate of 17.2 percent among teens who did not have past year MDE. This pattern was similar for most specific types of illegal drug use, including the use of marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogens, or inhalants and the nonmedical use of prescription-type psychotherapeutics.

Research suggests that people who used ecstasy at least 25 times had lowered serotonin levels for as long as a year after quitting.

In 2008, 75.9 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 enrolled in school in the past year reported having seen or heard drug or alcohol prevention messages at school, which was similar to the 75.8 percent reported in 2007, but was lower than the 78.8 percent reported in 2002. The prevalence of past month use of illegal drugs or marijuana was lower among those who reported having such exposure (8.5 percent and 6.1 percent for illegal drugs and marijuana, respectively) than among those who reported having no such exposure (12.1 percent and 9.0 percent, respectively).

Because amphetamines suppress appetite, chronic heavy users generally fail to eat properly and thus develop various illnesses related to vitamin deficiencies and malnutrition.

In 2005, among teens aged 12 to 17 with MDE in the past year who received prescription medication for depression, 28.7 percent believed that the prescription medication helped "not at all" or "a little." Nearly half of teens with MDE in the past year (47.2 percent) who received prescription medication for depression in the past year reported the medication was "a lot of help" or "extremely helpful."
