Studies show that marijuana users have a 4.8-fold increase in the risk of heart attack in the first hour after smoking the drug.
As of 15 years ago, over three quarters of all heroin users took the drug by injecting it. Today that number has shrunk to 65% as the number of individuals snorting heroin has grown.
Persons dependent on or abusing a substance in the past 12 months, or who received specialty treatment for a substance use problem within the past 12 months, are classified as needing treatment. In 2004, the number of persons aged 12 or older needing treatment for an alcohol or illegal drug use problem was 23.48 million (9.8 percent). Of these, 2.33 million received treatment at a specialty facility in the past year. Thus, 21.15 million people needed but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility in 2004. The number needing but not receiving treatment did not change significantly from 2002 to 2004.
Among adults aged 18 or older, past year prevalence of MDE varied by race/ethnicity in 2008. The rate of MDE was highest among persons reporting two or more races (12.7 percent), while rates for single race groups were 7.0 percent among whites, 5.2 percent among Hispanics, 4.9 percent among American Indians or Alaska Natives, 4.9 percent among blacks, and 3.6 percent among Asians. Estimates of past year MDE among Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders could not be reported due to low precision.
The top fifth for average annual incidence of marijuana for persons aged 12 or older was comprised mostly of States from the West (five) and from the Northeast (four). Seven States ranked in the top fifth for marijuana incidence in the 12 or older age group also ranked in the top fifth for past month marijuana use (Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont). Among boys aged 18 to 22 in 2008, full-time college students and those not enrolled full time in college did not differ significantly in their rates of past month cigar smoking (18.0 and 18.5 percent, respectively). However, cigar use by boys in this age range who were not enrolled full time in college declined from 2007 (21.7 percent) to 2008 (18.5 percent).
