Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
The overall rate of current illegal drug use remained stable from 2007 to 2008 among teens aged 12 to 17, as did the rates for most specific drugs, except for hallucinogens and the nonmedical use of psychotherapeutics. An increase was seen in the rate of past month hallucinogen use, which went from 0.7 percent in 2007 to 1.0 percent in 2008, driven in part by an increase in Ecstasy use from 0.3 to 0.4 percent. However, the rate of nonmedical use of prescription psychotherapeutic drugs among teens declined from 3.3 percent in 2007 to 2.9 percent in 2008, driven largely by a decrease in the misuse of pain relievers from 2.7 to 2.3 percent.
The definition of a person needing but not receiving treatment for an alcohol problem is that he or she meets the criteria for abuse of or dependence on alcohol according to the DSM-IV, but has not received specialty treatment for an alcohol problem in the past year. The percentage of persons aged 12 or older needing but not receiving treatment for alcohol problems (7.2 percent) in 2002.2003 was almost 3 times larger than the corresponding percentage for persons with illegal drug problems (2.7 percent).
In 2008, the average age at first nonmedical use of any psychotherapeutics among recent initiates aged 12 to 49 was 22.0 years. More specifically, it was 21.2 years for pain relievers, 24.4 years for tranquilizers, 21.3 years for stimulants, and 21.6 years for sedatives.
The primary goal of drug recovery counseling is to assist the individual in achieving and maintaining long term abstinence from drugs and alcohol. The secondary goal is the help them to recover from the damage that the drug or alcohol addiction has caused in their life.
In 2005, adults with MDE in the past year were more likely than those without MDE to have used an illegal drug in the past year (26.8 vs. 12.7 percent). A similar pattern was observed for specific types of past year illegal drug use, such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription-type psychotherapeutics.
Of the 8.0 million persons who had driven under the influence of illegal drugs in the past year, most (77 percent) had also driven under the influence of alcohol.
