When the optimal concentration of glutamate is altered by drug abuse, the brain attempts to compensate for this change in the level of the neurotransmitter, which can cause temporary or permanent impairment in cognitive function.
Raw Morphine (Opium) Morphine is an extremely addictive chemical substance, in terms of both psychologically and physically.
It is estimated that more than 40 million Americans suffer from chronic long term pain. When treating pain, doctor's have long wrestled with the question of how to relieve a patient's suffering by prescribing an effective medication, while avoiding the potential for that patient to become addicted to the pain medication.
In 2006, more than half of the 2.5 million persons aged 12 or older who received specialty substance use treatment in the past year also received treatment at a self help group (1.5 million persons). In addition, among those who received specialty substance use treatment, 377,000 received treatment at a prison or jail and 369,000 received treatment at an emergency room. The number who received treatment at a private doctor's office in 2006 was higher than the number in 2005 (422,000 vs. 254,000, respectively).
Although the rate of past month illegal drug use was higher among unemployed persons compared with those from other employment groups, most drug users were employed. Of the 17.2 million current illegal drug users aged 18 or older in 2005, 12.9 million (74.8 percent) were employed either full or part time.
In 2007, there were an estimated 529,000 current users of methamphetamine aged 12 or older (0.2 percent of the population). These estimates were not significantly different from the estimates for 2006 (731,000 or 0.3 percent).
