Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Although cocaine has been in use for more than 5000 years, the toxic dose or the amount of cocaine that will cause death or some significant medical consequence is unknown.
The number of recent new users of methamphetamine taken nonmedically among persons aged 12 or older was 192,000 in 2005. Between 2002 and 2004, the number of methamphetamine initiates remained steady at around 300,000 per year, but there was a decline from 2004 (318,000 initiates) to 2005. The average age of new methamphetamine users aged 12 to 49 was 18.9 years in 2002, 20.4 years in 2003, 20.6 years in 2004, and 18.6 years in 2005.
Estimates of past month use of any illegal drug ranged from a low of 6.3 percent in Utah to a high of 12.0 percent in Alaska for all persons aged 12 or older. Utah and Alaska were significantly lower and higher, respectively, compared with the national average (8.25 percent). (See Section 1.5 for a discussion of the proper use of the prediction intervals [PIs].) The States with the highest rates of any illegal drug use for all persons aged 12 or older were mostly in the West (six States) and the Northeast (three States). Colorado, New Hampshire, and Vermont were in the highest fifth for all persons aged 12 or older and for each of the age subgroups: 12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older. Most of the States that had the lowest rates in the Nation for persons aged 12 or older were either from the South (five States) or the Midwest (three States). New Jersey and Utah completed the lowest fifth.
Treatment need is defined as having a substance use disorder or receiving treatment at a specialty facility (hospital inpatient, drug or alcohol rehabilitation, or mental health centers) within the past 12 months. In 2008, 23.1 million persons aged 12 or older needed treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem (9.2 percent of persons aged 12 or older). Of these, 2.3 million (0.9 percent of persons aged 12 or older and 9.9 percent of those who needed treatment) received treatment at a specialty facility. Thus, 20.8 million persons (8.3 percent of the population aged 12 or older) needed treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem but did not receive treatment at a specialty substance abuse facility in the past year.
Among teens aged 12 to 17, there were 1.3 million (4.9 percent) who needed treatment for an illegal drug use problem in 2005. Of this group, only 142,000 received treatment at a specialty facility (11.3 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 who needed treatment), leaving 1.1 million teens who needed treatment but did not receive it at a specialty facility.
There are many prescription drug rehab programs across the country. Many programs offer detoxification as part of their plan. Detox safely manages the acute physical symptoms of withdrawal which are associated with stopping prescription drug use. This is only the initial step on the road to recovery. Alone, detox does little to change long-term prescription drug addiction.
