The percentage of persons estimated to be dependent on illegal drugs in the past year was about 65 percent of those who were estimated to be dependent on or abused illegal drugs in the past year. State estimates for illegal drug dependence for persons aged 12 or older ranged from 1.6 percent in Iowa to 3.0 percent in the District of Columbia. The highest rates of illegal drug dependence were among persons aged 18 to 25, with the highest rate in Massachusetts (8.3 percent).
The rate of current use of any tobacco product among persons aged 12 or older remained steady from 2007 to 2008 (28.6 and 28.4 percent, respectively). Rates of current use of cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, cigars, and pipe tobacco also did not change significantly over that period. However, between 2002 and 2008, past month use of any tobacco product decreased from 30.4 to 28.4 percent, and past month cigarette use declined from 26.0 to 23.9 percent. Rates of past month use of cigars, smokeless tobacco, and pipe tobacco in 2008 were similar to corresponding rates in 2002.
In 2008, past month marijuana use was reported by 2.3 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 who strongly or somewhat disapproved of their peers using marijuana once a month or more, lower than the 27.1 percent of teens who reported that they neither approve nor disapprove of such behavior from their peers.
Perceived risk is measured by NSDUH as the percentage reporting that there is great risk in the substance use behavior. The percentage of teens aged 12 to 17 perceiving great risk in smoking marijuana once or twice a week increased from 51.5 percent in 2002 to 55.0 percent in 2005, but dropped to 53.1 percent in 2008. A decline from 2005 to 2008 also was observed for using LSD once or twice a week (76.2 percent in 2002, 76.1 percent in 2005, and 73.9 percent in 2008). Between 2002 and 2008, the percentages who reported great risk in using alcohol and cigarettes increased. In 2002, 63.1 percent of teens reported great risk in smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day, and in 2008 the percentage increased to 69.7 percent. In 2002, 38.2 percent reported great risk in binge drinking once or twice a week, and in 2008 the percentage increased to 40.5 percent.
Methadone addiction is a very serious problem. In blind trials, users who were given both of the drugs orally were not able to tell the difference between the effects of heroin and Methadone.
Past month marijuana use among male teens aged 12 to 17 declined gradually from 9.1 percent in 2002 to 6.8 percent in 2006. Among female teens, the trend was less clear with the rates in 2006 (6.4 percent) and 2002 (7.2 percent) not being significantly different.
