No one knows for sure what the possible short and long term effects are as related to the use of bath salts because these synthetic drugs are in the experimental phases and have not yet been tested for human consumption; there is always a possibility that some of these effects could turn out to be irreversible.
Among teens aged 12 to 17, rates of current illegal drug use varied significantly by major racial/ethnic groups in 2004. The rate was highest among American Indian or Alaska Native teens (26.0 percent). Rates were 12.2 percent for teens reporting two or more races, 11.1 percent for white teens, 10.2 percent for Hispanic teens, 9.3 percent for black teens, and 6.0 percent for Asian teens.
In 2008, the number of persons aged 12 or older needing treatment for an illegal drug use problem was 7.6 million (3.0 percent of the total population). Of these, 1.2 million (0.5 percent of the total population and 16.0 percent of the persons who needed treatment) received treatment at a specialty facility for an illegal drug use problem in the past year. Thus, there were 6.4 million persons (2.5 percent of the total population) who needed but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility for an illegal drug use problem in 2008. None of these estimates changed significantly between 2007 and 2008. The percentage of persons needing treatment for an illegal drug use problem decreased between 2002 (3.3 percent) and 2008 (3.0 percent).
