Among young adults 18 to 22 years old, full time college students were less likely to be current cigarette smokers than their peers who were not enrolled full time in college. Cigarette use in the past month in 2006 was reported by 28.4 percent of full time college students, less than the rate of 43.5 percent for those not enrolled full time.

In 2008, adults aged 18 or older with past year MDE had higher rates of past year illegal drug use than those without MDE (27.2 vs. 13.0 percent). A similar pattern was observed for specific types of past year illegal drug use, such as the use of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, or hallucinogens and the nonmedical use of prescription type psychotherapeutics.

Between 1994 and 2000, the number of new stimulants users among 12 to 17 year olds was significantly larger than the number among 18 to 25 year olds. This pattern was not observed prior to 1994.

In 2005, there were 3.4 million teens aged 12 to 17 years (13.7 percent of the population aged 12 to 17 years old) who had at least one MDE in their lifetime and 2.2 million teens (8.8 percent) who had MDE during the past year.

Driving under the influence of alcohol was associated with age in 2008. An estimated 7.2 percent of 16 or 17 year olds, 16.7 percent of 18 to 20 year olds, and 26.1 percent of 21 to 25 year olds reported driving under the influence of alcohol in the past year. Beyond age 25, these rates showed a general decline with increasing age.

Most (63.3 percent) of the 2.1 million recent marijuana initiates were younger than age 18 when they first used. Among teens aged 12 to 17, an estimated 4.7 percent had used marijuana for the first time within the past year, similar to the rate in 2005 (4.5 percent).
