Of these, 3.1 million were classified with dependence on or abuse of both alcohol and illegal drugs, 3.9 million were dependent on or abused illegal drugs but not alcohol, and 15.2 million were dependent on or abused alcohol but not illegal drugs.
Between 2004 and 2005, there was a decrease in the number and percentage of teens aged 12 to 17 who needed treatment for an alcohol or illegal drug use problem: 2.3 million in 2004 (9.1 percent) compared with 2.1 million in 2005 (8.3 percent).
