In 2008, 4.0 million persons aged 12 or older (1.6 percent of the population) received treatment for a problem related to the use of alcohol or illegal drugs. Of these, 1.3 million received treatment for the use of both alcohol and illegal drugs, 0.8 million received treatment for the use of illegal drugs but not alcohol, and 1.6 million received treatment for the use of alcohol but not illegal drugs. Women are up to three times more likely than men to be prescribed drugs such as Percocet; they are also twice as likely to form a Percocet addiction.
