Although the root causes of drug addiction remain unclear, the new study reveals that scientists have identified a number of biological, psychological and social conditions that can help to identify whether a person will become an addict.
In 2006, an estimated 2.8 million persons aged 12 or older used an illegal drug for the first time within the past 12 months; this averages to nearly 8,000 initiates per day. This estimate was not significantly different from the number in 2005 (2.9 million). More than half of initiates (57.8 percent) were younger than age 18 when they first used, and about half of new users (53.2 percent) were female. The average age at initiation among persons aged 12 to 49 was 19.0 years.
Researchers found elevated levels of serum C-reactive protein (CRP), a protein associated with inflammation, in cocaine abusers was associated with endothelial abnormalities and coronary artery calcification. Both are factors known to contribute to heart disease.
During 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a Public Health Advisory about methadone use for pain relief; this was entitled "Methadone Use for Pain Control May Result in Death and Life-Threatening Changes in Breathing and Heart Beat."
