Nonmedical users of prescription-type psychotherapeutic drugs are asked questions regarding how they obtained the drugs they recently used nonmedically. In both 2005 and 2006, over half of the nonmedical users of prescription-type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives said they obtained the drugs they used most recently "from a friend or relative for free." A follow-up question added in 2006 asked these respondents where their friend or relative had obtained the drugs.

Among those aged 50 to 59, the rate of past month illegal drug use increased from 2.7 percent in 2002 to 4.6 percent in 2008. This trend may partially reflect the aging into this age group of the baby boom cohort, whose lifetime rate of illegal drug use is higher than those of older cohorts.

Among persons aged 12 to 20, past month alcohol use rates in 2007 were 16.8 percent among Asians, 18.3 percent among blacks, 24.7 percent among Hispanics, 26.2 percent among those reporting two or more races, 28.3 percent among American Indians or Alaska Natives, and 32.0 percent among whites.

The average age of initiation of marijuana use in 2000 was 17.5 years. The average age of marijuana initiates has generally declined since 1965.

An individual was arrested in Maine in 2000 and charged with selling approximately $8,000 worth of OxyContin weekly. The OxyContin was prescribed to the individual's wife to control cancer-related pain. The OxyContin pills were paid for by Medicaid, and the husband sold most of them for a substantial profit.

The percentage of teens aged 12 to 17 perceiving great risk in having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week was stable between 2002 and 2006 (38.2 percent in 2002 and 39.4 percent in 2006) with the exception of a significant increase between 2004 (38.1 percent) and 2006. The rates of past month binge alcohol use among teens remained unchanged (10.7 percent in 2002 and 10.3 percent in 2006).
